De la Terre Bakery

Chef Jan Campbell-Luxton, owner and proprietor, has worked in professional kitchens in Canada and internationally since 1996. He trained at the Stratford Chefs School, then stayed on for several years there as a teacher. The philosophy of de la terre stems from his undergraduate honours degree in international development studies (Trent University). Chef Campbell-Luxton lives in St. Catharines with his partner Kate and their two sons, Joshua and Simon.

de la terre is deeply committed to foregrounding locally produced foods and their producers, as well as encouraging consumer support of organic and sustainable agricultural practices. In this spirit, we use biodegradable and compostable take-out containers, cutlery, and napkins. We purchase our flour and produce from small independent farmers wherever possible.

HighMark Farms

We have a modest farm operation on the outskirts of Bradford Ontario just north of Toronto. We moved here from city some twenty years ago just as we were starting our young family. Over the years our farming endeavors have been many and included beef cattle, sheep and goats, wild boars and domestic pigs, chickens and horses as well as garden and field crops. Although it has been hard work, we have been privileged to enjoy clean and organic foods all these years.
Now we would like to offer our products to individuals and families who like us, are interested in eating good wholesome food.

We hope that our endeavor will be welcomed and appreciated as we are giving 110% to produce great food for all. Hope to see you at harvest times.

Louise Prete Fine Foods

Louise Prete was born in Italy on April 15, 1910. She came to Canada as young girl with her two brothers and four sisters.

Louise grew up in a large Italian family where the love of food was ever present. Louise married when she was a young woman and settled down with my grandfather and started a family. Shortly after they were married they built and ran a small hotel. While my grandfather saw to hotel guests and the front desk my grandmother took care of the hotels kitchen and dinning room. As a kid growing up my family would often spend summer holidays with my grandparents at the Normandie hotel. The kitchen was the hub of all activity and where we spent most of our time. At night the dinning room was bustling and busy with hotel guests. It was sheer excitement for me, watching my grandmother prepare and cook her mouthwatering Italian specialties was a thrill. Dinner was always a big event with my family, homemade pasta made that day, rolled out and cut into strands that seemed to go on forever. There was always a tomato sauce that simmered for hours filling the kitchen with delightful aromas. The food was simple but beautifully prepared and delicious.

The time spent with my grandmother in her kitchen watching her lovingly prepare food for her family and guests is where I discovered my love of food and my inspiration for Louise Prete Fine Foods.

Monforte Dairy

Monforte’s owner/lead cheesemaker, is a veteran chef whose cuisine is well-known to patrons of Stratford’s stellar restaurants Rundles and the Old Prune. A graduate of the inaugural class of ’83 at the Stratford Chefs School, Ruth is past chef at the Stratford Festival’s Green Room restaurant, simultaneously teaching at the Chefs School. Of Mennonite descent herself, Ruth is the mother of three sons, Ben, Christian and Daniel.

Ruth was recently honoured at the Stratford Optimism Place 10th Annual Women of the Year Awards. She won the 2008 Women in Agriculture Award in recognition of her innovative role as a cheesemaker and entrepreneur. The presenter said that Ruth shows a “deep love of her craft, one which is especially suited to women,” and that “she has shaken our notion of what great cheese is.”

In accepting the award, Ruth left the crowd laughing when she said of the lofty introduction that preceded her: “I found it difficult to listen to. In fact, I’m just an old broad who had a mid-life crisis!”
